Our homes should be havens for health and wellbeing, places where our bodies and minds can rest and repair, in order to give us strength to cope with the demands of modern life.  Yet our increasing dependence on electronic gadgets and wireless devices means we are surrounded by fields of electromagnetic energy (EMFs) which are millions of times higher than our predecessors were exposed to a hundred years ago.  The human body was not designed to tolerate these high levels of EMFs and it cannot evolve and adapt quickly enough to manage this now. Experts in the field of EMF are predicting that this public health concern will be recognised as a greater risk than smoking, although unfortunately this is not likely to be for several years.  But other parts of Europe are taking this issue much more seriously than we are in the UK.  For example, in Austria permitted public levels of radiation are very much lower than in the UK, and in France, there are dedicated EMF- free zones and no WiFi in nursery schools.

Scientific studies have already attributed a long list of health symptoms and conditions to EMF exposure; including headaches, sleep disturbance, poor memory and cognitive disturbance, behaviour change in children, depression, nausea, infertility, miscarriage, cancer, multiple sclerosis and autism.  In fact the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has catagorized non-ionizing radiation as a Class 2B possible carcinogen.  There are of course other reasons why a person by may be experiencing such symptoms, or have contracted a serious disease, but the role that EMF exposure is playing in putting our bodies under greater stress should not be underestimated.

There is a growing number of sufferers of Electrosensitivity (ES), which is essentially an allergy to EMFs (electromagnetic fields), and in Sweden ES is recognised as a disability.  There is little understanding of this condition by mainstream UK doctors but there are sources of support and action that can be taken in order to improve the condition, relieve symptoms and increase quality of life.

Now, more than ever, we have to rely on ourselves to manage this public health hazard and protect our own health.

EMFsurveys covers the south west of England but other similar services are available around the UK.  An EMF survey of home or other significant place may be the first step in taking back some control.
